you don't need to be good to draw to use these tricks, you only need photoshop..
if you don't know how use the gray-scale to create light and shadows,
so can you just keep it gray all over. it will look a little flat but..

There is one word wrong at the point of shading , he wrote 40% "Druck", it has to be "Fluss".
But else its easy to understand :).
